In the 1960s and 70s, New York was dirty and dangerous. There was violence in the subway, pornography in 42nd Street, and gangs in the Bronx. This same period also saw the creativity of the counterculture movement, the vibrancy of the sexual revolution, the birth of civil rights, gay and women's movements. New York was not for the faint of heart. It could be fun, and it could made you cry. These contradictions inspired Jean-Pierre Laffont to document it all.
