Tom Johnson

Birthdate: October 31st, 1991

Education: Self-taught, Tom left school at age 17. In 2015 he was selected by Mother, a creative agency network, for Downstairs at Mother, their exhibition event highlighting emerging British talent.

Aesthetic: Tom shoots portraits of those on the edges of society, in the subcultures that surround him: women bodybuilders, transvestites, firefighters and more. He finds his subjects everywhere – on the streets, through social media, or in his own social circle.

Influences: Among the books of photography that fill his studio are those by Richard Avedon, Diane Arbus, Alec Soth, or Katy Grannan. A book by Nicolas Nixon is the most recent addition.

Currently: With several great commissions on the horizon and long-term projects underway in the UK and the USA, Tom has his hands full, but is always on the lookout for new subjects.
