Portfolio No. 5
Portfolio composed of 8 drawings of Jean André. 350 copies.
Jean André has never had an office job. Originally from the Aveyron region of France, he left early on for 2 years of Visual Communication studies in Paris. Once qualified, he quickly settled into a studio on the Boulevard de la Villette, opting for the freedom of freelance work. From his airy perch, this young graphic artist designs logos, websites and does illustrations for magazines or labels like Ed Banger, even turning his hand to tattoos. So what’s his work like? « A dash of humour, a lot of glamour, a few smiley faces and a lot of women. » Jean André is happy to place his work under the heading of “gentleman’s art”, midway between pin up art and a simple celebration of women’s beauty. So it isn’t surprising to find that his influences range from Pop art master, Tom Wesselmann, to the cheeky Jean Paul Goude or the photographer Richard Kern. But they don’t stop there. Jean André also takes inspiration from the teemingly rich worlds of Matisse and Dali, and in fact, all « image artisans who refuse to limit themselves to whatever techniques or materials are fashionable at the moment. » Jean André loves to feel the craft of drawing, and uses “real tools” like India ink « which gives an incomparable depth, and thousands of different effects depending on which tool you use. » Jean André and his pin ups will be celebrating love at Paris concept store colette from February 3 to 22.
