Untitled, [Chieska], 2018
This portrait of Davison’s friend, Chi, is a skilful blend of luck and premeditation.
While the artist tends to neither name or explain his images in order to leave the viewer free to imagine, he says, « I live next to a huge house with bright blue siding, and even after having lived in the area for a year, I still hadn’t taken a picture of it. This type of siding reminds me of Walker Evans, but the strangeness of the gesture and the colour are closer to Salvador Dalí, who was my first favourite artist.”
When he snapped the candid shot, Davison explains that he hadn’t noticed the holes in his friend’s polka-dot dress. “I didn’t notice until we were outside, and they instantly became a pair of eyes” – giving the shot a strange quality that was also appreciated by his model.
