Dark Summer is a series of erotic image nights at Claire de Rouen, begun in 2016 in collaboration with Vickie Biggs. A collection of books, magazines and prints is put together around a theme or moment.
The third Dark Summer presents work by women photographers and seeks to problematise the phrase 'the female gaze'. The night will have a special focus on the photography of 25-year-old British artist Maisie Cousins, who has made a series of limited edition prints especially for Claire de Rouen.
Books and prints by Maisie Cousins, Collier Schorr, Lina Scheynius, Valerie Phillips...
Dark Summer takes its name from Bob Carlos Clarke's third book, published in 1985. Carlos Clarke was an Irish-born, London-based photographer who graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1975. Renowned for his erotic photographs as well as celebrity portraits and images for advertising, he knew Claire de Rouen well, and was crucial to the establishment of her bookshop in 2005 (above a sex shop, appropriately).Dark Summer
